Implant Case #3 – Cracked Molar Replacement

August 15, 2019 By Team Member

Over time the forces exerted by chewing and stress can crack a tooth. In this case, a molar that has had root canal treatment (endodontic therapy).

The only treatment left for a cracked tooth is, as Dr. Beers says, “fresh air and sunshine.” But studies show that having teeth to chew your meat and vegetables improves longevity.

Dental implants are the best option for replacing a lost tooth and are especially suited to replacing a molar.

The best way to replace a missing tooth that feels like your natural tooth is the dental implant. Here is the step by step process:

  1. The damaged tooth is extracted.
  2. The site is allowed to heal and bone to fill in the void for about six months.
  3. An implant is placed into the bone. The implant is allowed to integrate with the bone which can take roughly six months.
  4. Once sufficient integration has been measured an impression is taken to have a crown and it’s abutment made in a lab.
  5. The permanent crown and abutment are seated and now you have a natural looking and functional replacement tooth.

Implant Case #1

Often, the loss of a tooth is unexpected. A young woman in her 20’s complained that her upper left front tooth (#9) didn’t feel right. X-rays including a three-dimensional cone-beam revealed catastrophic root resorption and the ultimate loss of the tooth.

Not many people are willing to go without one of their front teeth and fortunately Dr. Beers is able to, in many cases, place an immediate implant with a temporary crown.

Using the cone-beam and other diagnostic information, a surgical guide was created to place the implant correctly immediately following the extraction of the failing tooth.

The temporary crown and custom abutment were placed out of occlusion to allow for healing and to give a natural look until the permanent crown could be created.

The appearance of this tooth looks great and better yet the implant is functional!

When all of your other teeth are healthy and an injury or other condition causes the loss of one tooth and that tooth is highly visible in your smile, the single tooth implant has become the standard of care in replacing such teeth.

In this case, tooth #8 was replaced using an endosseous implant and full ceramic crown joined by a custom zirconium abutment.
