A Youthful Smile for the Young at Heart

May 9, 2018 By Dr. Beers' Office

Who says you have to look your age? Growing older is a fact of life if you live long enough, but that does not mean we have to give into the ravages of the aging process.

Being young at heart is about more than appearance (which we will address later in this article), it is about maximizing the number of years and the quality of those years. A recent Harvard study published in the journal Circulation reveals that there are five simple, healthy habits that anyone can add to their lifestyle as late as age 50 to add as many as 12 years for men and 14 for women.

These five habits are only a part of the lifestyle of 8% of Americans and contribute to why the United States ranks only 31st in the world for life expectancy at birth. The five healthy habits that anyone can quickly make a part of their lives are:

  • Not Smoking
  • Having a body mass index between 18.5 and 25
  • At least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day
  • Having no more than one 150ml glass of wine for women and two for men each day
  • Having a diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and whole grains but low in red meat, saturated fats, and sugar.

These healthy lifestyle choices led to an 82% less likely chance of dying from heart disease and 65% less likely chance of dying from cancer when compared to those with a less healthy lifestyle.

Of course, other choices can improve your health and longevity but the Harvard study spanned 30 years, and those choices gave the most predictable results.

There is an old saying that states “you can’t judge a book by its cover” but as we well know most people do just that. In addition to being healthy and young on the inside, most people prefer to look their best on the outside without going to extremes.

There are some simple things you can do to give your outward appearance more youth that also benefit your overall health. The at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise can include cardio that keeps blood flowing to your skin for a youthful glow while resistance training can help maintain muscle tone.

Getting enough sleep (7-8 hours for most adults) not only helps your hormone balance it can reduce bags and wrinkles if you are also drinking plenty of water each day.

One of the better ways to restore a youthful look without resorting to cosmetic or plastic surgery is to restore your smile. Missing, chipped, stained and decayed teeth all contribute to the aged look.

When you are missing molars, it can sometimes give your face a compressed look, and a missing tooth from your smile is anything but youthful. Today, it is effortless to replace a missing tooth with a realistic and functional implant placed by Dr. Beers. It is an instant facelift!

Yellow, darkened and stained teeth give an appearance of looking old, and it is one of the easiest to correct. Take home whitening can take as little as two weeks for most people to see the result they want, while the in-office whitening can give you the same thing in under 2 hours.

Chipped, broken and worn teeth can really contribute to that overall haggard and worn look. When restored by a dentist with the training and experience, you can immediately see the years come off. Don’t believe it? Compare a picture of yourself in your early 20’s to the smile you see in the mirror today.

Living a long life doesn’t mean looking or acting old. We can still be active while looking our best without very much effort these days. You can be the person that is a young version of your age, and if you tell them how old you are, they may not believe you could be that old.

Many Socorro Residents Look Forward to Summer Vacation

May 2, 2018 By Dr. Beers' Office

The school year is coming to an end at New Mexico Tech and Socorro Consolidated Schools with seniors looking forward to graduation and everyone else hoping to make a getaway from the daily grind.

More than half of families in the United States will take a vacation this year. Several studies have found that taking a vacation can make you more productive while reducing your stress.

Even taking a few days at Memorial Day to visit places in New Mexico that you have heard about but never seen can be a mini adventure for the family that allows you and your gang to enjoy a change of pace while making new memories.

As you plan your time away, whether hitting the rapids of northern New Mexico or the caves in Carlsbad, from camping to staying at a resort hotel there are some preparations you might consider to avoid potential problems while away from home.

First, it is always a good idea to be current on your medical and dental exams to screen for any potential problems. We tend to believe that our health has not changed, but if you have not had a recent physical or dental exam, you might not realize that you have developed a condition that needs attention.

Second, it is a good idea to have an emergency kit to cover various situations. If you are traveling by car AAA recommends you should have the following:

  • A basic first aid kit (more on that)
  • A fire extinguisher,
  • Three reflective triangles,
  • A tire gauge,
  • Foam tire sealant,
  • Jumper cables,
  • A good flashlight with extra batteries,
  • Gloves,
  • Rags,
  • Duct tape,
  • A tow strap,
  • A multipurpose tool,
  • Rain poncho and
  • Drinking water.

You can buy an already assembled kit online if you prefer too.

The first aid kits come in many shapes and sizes, and these too can be bought online, but if you want to put your own together, you should read the recommendations from the Red Cross website.

Third, in addition to a well done first aid kit, you can prepare for dental emergencies too.

A simple dental first aid kit would include:

  • Some sterile gauze,
  • A small container with a lid (to hold a knocked out tooth or crown),
  • Dental wax if someone has braces,
  • Temporary filling material and
  • Vaseline, it might sound strange, but it  is a better way to reattach a crown temporarily, just fill the crown up and pop it on. If you are away for longer, you can use temporary cement sold in many pharmacy departments.

Be sure to include over the counter pain relievers such as:

  • Ibuprofen,
  • Topical anesthetic (don’t forget the cotton swabs) and
  • Some disposable cold compresses.

Again, there are many premade kits sold online to tackle common mishaps and unexpected situations. In addition to first aid kits, you could have a small sewing kit for wardrobe malfunctions or ripped clothes, camping kits and so many more.

The important thing is to enjoy your vacation and prepare for the interruptions that inevitably happen. While you shouldn’t worry or fret over what might happen, you should be ready for your garden variety mishaps. Preparation will ultimately reduce your stress which is the point of taking your vacation in the first place.

Big Plans Deserve Bright White Smiles

September 10, 2015 By Dr. Beers' Office

DO YOU HAVE A graduation, reunion, vacation, or wedding coming up? These occasions mean LOTS of photographs. Are you ready? Whether you’re in the wedding party, a parent to the bride or groom, or just prepping yourself to see old friends, you want to look your best for all those photos.

Your Smile Is The FIRST Thing People Notice

While you’re shopping for the perfect dress, or weighing in at the gym, consider this:

  • Most people list a smile as the FIRST thing they notice about a person.
  • 96% of adults believe an attractive smile makes you more appealing to the opposite sex.
  • Since yellowing teeth are a sign of age, whitening is one of the quickest, most effective ways to look and feel younger.

The good news is that we offer great whitening options for our patients.

Zoom whitening can brighten and whiten your smile by 7-8 shades the same day! AND we will make take home whitening trays so you can stay white as you re-stain your teeth eating the foods you love.

Our take home whitening system will allow you to whiten in the comfort of your own home at the pace you are comfortable. You can still achieve the same level of whitening but it may take 2-4 weeks to get there and the cost is less.

Could Missing Teeth Predict a Heart Attack?

June 30, 2015 By Dr. Beers' Office

Missing teeth are cute on a seven year old because it is a normal part of life for a child, but what about adults? Should we be concerned if we have lost several teeth to gum disease or tooth decay? Isn’t it just the way it is, like for our parents or grandparents?

That is true if you want the life expectancy of 50 years ago instead of today.

A new study conducted in Finland at the University of Helsinki in collaboration with The National Institute for Health and Welfare found a relationship between the number of missing teeth you have due to disease and heart attacks, diabetes and death.

It has been known for some time that there is an association with inflammatory oral diseases such as periodontitis (gum disease) and the non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, the most common cause of death worldwide.

In 1997 the National FINRISK Study looked at the Finnish population, surveying 8,446 subjects, aged 28-75. They were asked to fill out a comprehensive questionnaire and participate in clinical examinations. The number of missing teeth was recorded at a baseline.

The study used information on incident disease events and deaths from the national registers in a 13 year follow up. The data gathered revealed some amazing correlations.
Those missing five or more teeth due to disease increased their risk of heart attacks and myocardial infarcations by as much as 140%! If they were missing more than nine teeth it increased the risk of cardiovascular disease by 51%, diabetes by 31% and death by 37%.

The risks for those who were edentulous (having no teeth) were 40-68% greater to die from a heart attack.

The take away from this study and other similar studies is that while there are many contributing factors to heart disease and diabetes such as diet, exercise and hormone imbalances, one important area that is often overlooked is uncontrolled periodontal disease.

Modern dentistry allows for the treatment and control of the various forms of gum disease. You no longer have to accept the loss of permanent teeth as genetic because your mother or father lived without their teeth.

You also can add years to your life by working with Dr. Beers and your healthcare provider to remove the risks that are associated with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Call today to schedule a comprehensive evaluation with Dr. Beers at (575)835-3662.
